How do you know you are making assumptions? It’s simple...always assume your’re assuming (Wait a minute, is that an assumption?) Our brain uses assumptions to keep us safe. Our amygdala triggers our fight or flight response. If we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory, our assumptions protect us. Assumptions disguise themselves in many forms: unregcognized, unstated, unquestioned, naive, pragmatic, productive, unproductive, likely facts, pessimistic optimistic and sour grapes. The next time you are speaking with a friend, colleague, or family member, take pause and create new awareness of the way assumptions may be taking you away from being present in the moment.
